Questions

How much do web designers charge per hour?+

Freelance web designers in the US should charge about $55–$90 an hour, based on a median web developer wage of $44.54 (BLS, May 2025) and the costs an employee never pays.

Which state pays web developers the most?+

Washington, at a median $62.71 an hour. Mississippi has the lowest published wage, at $23.34.

Do web designers and web developers earn the same?+

Not quite. Nationally, web developers earn a median $44.54 an hour and web and digital interface designers $50.00. For someone building small-business sites the two jobs overlap, so the rates here use the developer wage where BLS publishes one.

Where do these numbers come from?+

The Bureau of Labor Statistics' Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey, May 2025 estimates. They are employees' wages; the freelance rates are estimates built from them (1.25 to 2 times the wage).
